Our Mission & History

Our Mission

EDUCATE. EMPOWER. EMPLOY.

Our mission is to provide youth the education and training needed to complete secondary education and to transition into post-secondary education or employment so that they become self-sufficient, contributing members of their communities.

Our History

Founded in 1991 by Joan McLaughlin and Gladys Oberle, Employment Resources Incorporated (ERI) was created to support disadvantaged and disabled youth in the Fredericksburg area through specialized education and workforce training.

To better serve students with disabilities, ERI launched The Star Center, one of the region’s first private special education day programs. Following Mrs. Oberle’s passing in 1996, it was renamed The Gladys H. Oberle School, and later The Oberle Academy, a leading program in the area.

For over 30 years, ERI has partnered with schools, agencies, and businesses to offer innovative programs in special education, alternative learning, and career training. With over 30 experienced staff and strong community partnerships, The Oberle Academy continues to support youth on their path to success.

Today,  The Oberle Academy proudly features a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, including a partnership with Germanna Community College, offering students hands-on training in high-demand fields. Our highly skilled, certificated staff scaffold learning opportunities for students. We boast a 1:4 staff to student ratio and are accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education (VAISEF) and are licensed by the VIrginia Department of Education (VDOE). Students take part in community-based learning opportunities, rigorous academic programs, and fine arts (music, art, and theater arts).
